Smart roads will be safer than cars

We used to believe that traffic safety is limited only by such an unreliable vehicle, like a car, but the Dutch design team believes that the road is no less active role. Therefore, it offers a number of interesting ideas that should provide more security while driving.

Glowing Lines concept draws inspiration from the “cat’s eye”, which are often used in the equipment of European roads, but instead of glass beads that reflect headlights at night, to use luminescent paint, glow, which is continuing for ten hours. That is, all night. Especially useful it will be on the back roads and in low-light areas away from the city.

Wind Lights uses small windmills to generate enough light to not use external sources. Turbulence, which is generated by the movement of air near a passing car, will highlight different parts of the road.

In contrast to the city lights that burn continuously, even if no movement there, the concept of Interactive Light uses motion sensors to activate different light sources during the approach the car. Of course, the light turns on in advance, for a hundred yards to the right section, otherwise there would be no point.

Roads may be treacherous misleading if I miss “Warning, ice,” so Dynamic Paint warn the driver about the state of the road surface. As soon as the temperature drops below freezing, the road will be a snowflake symbol, painted in a temperature sensitive paint, and warn the driver of danger.

Electric Priority Lane is a special section of the road allotted electric vehicles. Induction coils built into the roadway will allow the car to charge the battery on the go, so you will not have the annoying limitations on the charge of your transport.

Some of these concepts look very good, while others need to modify them to be more useful. Design team Studio Roosegaarde Heijmans Infrastructure and won the prize for the best concept for the future of Dutch Design Awards, and the Dutch government announced that he was going to include some of the ideas in the works for next year. Unfortunately, it did not specify which ones. Also, I think the concept Glowing Lines makes no sense in practical implementation.
